This article is interesting.

I think if there was always a thought of adding a lesbian relationship to DH, they wanted to avoid having one of the main cast (Marcia, Teri, Eva, Felicity) "cross over".

Katherine's great at being a "wild card", so having her do this was almost a no-brainer. And having Robin there as another lost soul works perfectly.

Gay relationships on a major network are nothing new (Brothers & Sisters, Buffy, DeGrassi). And Dana has always been supportive of LGBT rights, and has often done controversial roles. So this shouldn't be a huge shock to anyone.

I remember when Portia DeRossi was offended by a lesbian kiss on Ally, because she felt that instance trivialized same sex relationships. I have faith Dana would not be doing this if titillation and sensationalism were all this was about. This should be really interesting.

As I always say:

It's never boring being a Dana fan.

Katherine's story last fall was the best story I'd ever seen on the pain of letting go. A lesbian story could be equally great. I love all the characters on DH, because they all seem to be good people with realistic problems and genuine human frailties. But, Katherine will always be my favorite, because well, it's Dana! So, even though I'm not gay, if Katherine decides she's a lesbian, she'll still be my absolute favorite character on television. I love her and her sexual orientation will not change that. I think Dana and the writers on DH are getting better and better all the time!

(There is still that that kiss ..that the unforgettable Senator Grisham never got to finish..so maybe now it will happen..;)

Yeah, an almost a kiss never been so sexier.
In this scene, if they had kissed it wouldnt be as good as gone.

Reg, You're absolutely right. It's never boring being a Dana fan. Every day Dana surprises us wonderful characters and actions. She's a wonderful human being.

about the article: I really enjoyed the things that Julie said. I'm so excited! can't wait to see all this on DH.

"I think avoiding lesbian or gay story lines on screen.. would only help prejudices to stay alive, so thank you Dana and Marc Cherry to fight against this!"

@Chrisi- true, it's only by the visibility of gays and lesbians on TV shows and film we can fight the prejudices and show gays are in our neighbourhoods.work places.. people -like everyone else.

@Anna I agree, It is about time there was a female gay story/character on suburbia /mini-universe Wisteria Lane

" Katherine, that i am sure in therapy she has discovered her feelings for womyn, something she had hid for years, as in real life .. but finally come out. This is the life of a lesbian, that is Older and finally finds herself."

@ Val- nicely put !! I hear people say":..well that storyline is stupid.it doesn't make any sense. women at their 40's -50's do not suddenly discover feelings for other women.." Well- they do ,and it happens.
They are either just aware of these feelings.or only now allow things that were hidden to come out. It does happen!

@ Amy-it's great that we all support Dana here on her role in DH. And Yes.. it would be nice after Senator Grisham's never-ending kiss- to see finally. ..a kiss.
"China Beach"- it was Val who said- "wish for and look out for"- and before I knew it popped up in my country- daily- all seasons from the beginning!
20 years later - and it is still is superb show and Dana is a amazing as McMurphy!
I wish I could share it with You, dear Amy- come to Israel.:)

It's never boring being a Dana fan.

Yes, Reg, it never is - and these last few days there has been so much excitement on and outside the forum- in our Dana-loving community-it's wonderful!

I also thought that Marc would not use one of the four main wives for a lesbian storyline- (when you think of it..why not actually?) So luckily Dana gets to play this!
I hope you are right and this will not be trivialized- but rather be an interesting storyline-with depth.

Dear Dana-
I do hope Marc gives this storyline the depth it deserves - so you can do a wonderful job with it, as I know you can!!

"..but there are girls from the age of 13 that see you as a role-model. This wasn`t needed, not from you?..."

@ Dear Sheila, you know..there are out there also girls at 13 that have feelings for other girls. They need role models too. For them there are hardly any role models to be seen -to give them a sense of self worth. You know- it is not easy growing up- feeling different,, seeing that films and TV do not portray any characters that reflect who you are.
A lesbian storyline with a role model like Dana -can really support many young girls. They deserve and need role models -just like you do, Sheila!

I too was so disappointed that that never happened. but and so exstatic that it's happening on my other favorite tv show. I am also so in awe of dana's performance this season and truly believe she should get the emmy! she deserves it!

So can't wait till Multiple Sarcasms comes out in theaters! And i am really jealous of you, Adi, that you get to see China Beach on TV. I really want to see it since i was only 2 years old at the time of China Beach.

... but there are girls from the age of 13 that see you as a role-model. This wasn`t needed, not from you?

@Sheila: You have your opinion and that's OK of course. But I have to defend Dana. Why do you think that Dana portraying a woman who has feelings towards her own sex is not a role model? On the contrary! She can be a role for all those women who feel this way, who are lesbians, no matter if they have come out yet or not. The message of her taking part in this story line is: Hey, there are women is this world who love women, and that's absolutely OK. She shows young girls or women that the way they're feeling is nothing wrong, that they should live the way they want. So I think it was very brave of Dana to portray this new facette of Katherine. I think avoiding lesbian or gay story lines on screen or where ever would only help predjudices to stay alive, so thank you Dana and Marc Cherry to fight against this! And I don't think Dana just did this because she wanted to attract more fans, I think she did it because she has a good heart and cares for people and their needs.

Val/Adi, great posts! i really enjoy reading your responses!

I feel Dana is really an amazing talent! I know there are many people out there who may not agree with her upcoming relationship with Robin/Julie Benz! I feel that this story line is brilliant! It allows Dana show her versatility as an actress. Regardless of what roles/relationships Dana has onscreen she will always have fans of all ages. Dana is a brilliant woman and she knows how to create art, even if it means "girl on girl kiss" I think it is quite beautiful myself....

Dana, don't be left feeling guilty by doing such a scene! you are an artist! and a very good one at that! I will always support you in your work. Infact, I feel you are incredibly lucky to be working with such a brilliant man...Marc Cherry!

All the best everyone
Leah

I don’t want to start a discussion that could quickly turn mean, but I feel that I must answer Sheila’s post and support Dana’s choice. As I have said in previous posts, I am a very happily married hetro male, but in my life I have seen the pain prejudice has caused. Sheila claims that Dana is a role-model to young girls. That is true, but do consider that some of those young girls are lesbians. They are excluded by main-stream society. Don’t they deserve role-models too? I have heard Oprah talk about black exclusion when she was growing up, but how Diana Ross’ success gave her, as a young girl, hope.

We don’t even know whether this kiss is more than a ploy by the two women to avoid unwanted advances by men. It might end there, but I hope not. I hope it is a full-blown lesbian arc. If so, Dana’s portrayal can give some young lesbian girl a feeling of inclusion in our society. I say bravo!
